I thinks, I thinks, and nothing happens

Putting a book on the shelf, and flipped through to see what I underlined. Yes, I underline books. But that’s why I don’t use the library. I buy the book. My husband, whose mother was a librarian, gets squeamish when I do this. Nonetheless..
Quote from Foer book:
“But it’s so painful to think, and tell me, what did thinking ever do for me, to what great place did thinking ever bring me? I think and think and think, I’ve thought myself out of happiness one million times, but never once into it.”
My conclusion: Don’t over think anything. Any thing is worth only so much time. Live your life. And live in it a way you won’t have to apologize for later.

Hmmm…happiness. Huge article on it in the 3/18 Wall Street Journal. Lots of major psychologists doing research on it including Stanford’s own Brian Knutson, professor of psychology and neuroscience. Thinking doesn’t do it, but it turns out that anticipation of a good experience does. Sounds like a vote for authenticity…and no one’s ever had to apologize for that.

But I’m all about overthinking! ;)
No - I believe it’s important to be present in your life. It’s valuable to have a rich mental life, but so much overanalysis can prevent you from taking action in the real world. As Wayne would say, you’ve got to “live in the now!”
