The future of publishing: Why ebooks failed in 2000, and what it means for 2010

This post is adapted from a speech I gave at the O’Reilly Tools of Change publishing industry conference in February. It’s a great time for ebooks. There are at least six ebook reader devices on the market or in preparation….

Harvard Business Publishing: Umair Haque - What Apple Knows That Facebook Doesn’t

Too often, we don’t recognize the power of platforms - even in Silicon Valley. Nilofer Merchant, Rubicon’s CEO, writes frequently on the topic and ties it together with strategy. The piece below by Umair Haque, draws an interesting difference between…

The New How: Business Solutions Through Collaborative Strategy

For years now, our clients have let us build a different kind of strategy with them. They’ve let us not only catalyze and define the big idea, but they let us work with them to translate that big idea into a plan and approach that everyone buys into and ultimately makes real.

So many companies still deal with an age-old problem. They set strategy at the top of the organization (the 80,000 foot level) and then tell their people to execute it (at the 20,000 foot level) and make the 1,000 “little” decisions to make something real. But those strategies are often doomed to fail from the start because of how they were formed.

So we’ve written a book for those we can’t reach directly to help them build and align the different parts to create strategy that actually allows them to win and win repeatedly. It talks to the framework to do collaborative planning but it also talks about how to enable a company culture and be better leaders within that context.

It’s called The New How. O’Reilly published the book and helped make it a highly readable product. It started shipping on January 4th, 2010 (buy it here) and we’re excited to share what we’ve learned. We thank our clients and colleagues who have helped us to understand these simple truths we share and for being forgiving and flexible during the last year that it took Nilofer to produce the work.

We continue to do strategic consulting for tough problems that helps companies to win markets — that part hasn’t changed — but we’ll be adding capabilities to let us train and enable organizations to do collaborative strategy.

We’ll share more news on that as we have it; be sure to register for our Insight newsletter so we can keep you updated.
